Cylinder Head Replace - Pushrod Engine


The cylinder head, carburetor or TBI (Throttle Body Injection) unit and the intake and exhaust manifolds are removed as an assembly.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system and remove air cleaner or TBI cover.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove exhaust manifold shield, if equipped.
3. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold and heater hose at intake manifold.
4. Lower vehicle, then remove engine lift bracket and distributor.
5. Disconnect vacuum manifold from alternator bracket.
6. Disconnect and tag all vacuum lines that will interfere with cylinder head removal, then disconnect AIR pipe at exhaust check valve.
7. Disconnect accelerator linkage at carburetor or TBI unit, then remove accelerator linkage bracket bolt and the bracket.
8. Disconnect all electrical wires that will interfere with cylinder head removal, then remove upper radiator hose from cylinder head.
9. Remove dipstick tube bracket bolt and the hot water tube bracket.
10. Remove idler pulley assembly and AIR/power steering belt, if equipped.
11. Remove power steering pump, if equipped, and position aside.
12. Remove AIR bracket to intake manifold bolt, if equipped.
13. On power steering equipped vehicles, remove AIR pump pulley, AIR pump through bolt and power steering pump adjusting bracket.
14. Loosen AIR bracket lower bolt and rotate bracket aside, if equipped.
15. Disconnect fuel line from carburetor or TBI unit.
16. Remove alternator and position aside. Do not remove wires.
17. Remove alternator upper support bracket and brace.
18. Remove rocker arm cover and rocker arms, then the pushrods.
19. Remove cylinder head bolts and the cylinder head assembly.

20. Reverse procedure to install. Coat cylinder head and cylinder head bolts with sealer and install bolts finger tight. Torque cylinder head bolts to specification in sequence shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
