Starter Motor: Service and Repair


4-112 & 4-121 OVERHEAD VALVE ENGINES
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support front of vehicle.
3. Disconnect solenoid wires and battery cable at starter.
4. Remove rear engine mount support bracket, then the A/C compressor support rod (if equipped).
5. Remove starter to engine mounting bolts and lower starter. Note position of shims if used.
6. Reverse procedure to install.




1985---86 4-110 & 1987---88 4-122 OVERHEAD CAM ENGINE EXC. TURBOCHARGED
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove wiring harness clamp at motor mount.
2. Remove upper starter-to-engine block bolt.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. On automatic transaxle equipped models, disconnect speedometer cable, then remove rear transaxle strut.
5. On all models, remove throttle cable bracket, rear starter brace bolts and brace.
6. Remove lower starter-to-engine block bolt, then disconnect starter wiring.
7. Position starter nose down between transaxle and sway bar and attempt to remove. If necessary, pry engine forward or detach sway bar.
8. Reverse procedure to install.




1987---88 4-121 OVERHEAD CAM TURBOCHARGED ENGINE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove intake manifold support brace.
3. Disconnect wire harness clamp at motor mount, then the upper starter to engine block attaching bolt.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, remove transaxle rear strut.
6. On all models, remove fuel line to support bracket attaching bolt, then loosen fuel lines 1/2 turn to gain access to starter.
7. Remove rear starter brace attaching bolts, then the rear starter brace.
8. Remove lower starter to engine block attaching bolt.
9. Disconnect starter motor electrical connectors, then remove starter motor.
10. Reverse procedure to install.
