Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Fig. 3 Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then lower vehicle.
4. Remove oil level indicator tube, then the air cleaner assembly.
5. Disconnect electrical connectors, throttle linkage and fuel lines from throttle body unit. Disconnect heater hose from intake manifold.
6. On 1985---86 models, remove ignition coil.
7. On all models, disconnect all remaining electrical connectors from intake manifold and cylinder head.
8. Disconnect all vacuum lines from cylinder head.
9. On models equipped with A/C, unfasten A/C compressor and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines attached.
10. On all models, position alternator brackets aside, then remove upper power steering pump bracket.
11. Remove rocker arm cover, then the rocker arms and pushrods.
12. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder head.
13. Reverse procedure to install. Coat cylinder head bolts with sealer. Torque cylinder head attaching bolts in the following sequence:
a. Torque all bolts in sequence, Fig. 3, to 18 ft. lbs.
b. Tighten bolt No. 9 to 29 ft. lbs. and all other bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
c. Tighten bolt No. 9 an additional 90 degrees and all other bolts an additional 120 degrees.
