440-T4 2-3 Bind-ups & Slips

Always check the # 7 checkball capsule for leaks during a rebuild. The # 7 checkball is used to help exhaust residual 3rd gear oil at the end of a 3-2 downshift. A small leak at the # 7 Checkball will cause a bind-up. If the leak gets worse it will cause a slip in 3d gear. A # 7 checkball that leaks really bad will cause a neutral condition on the 2-3 shift.

Checking the # 7 checkball capsule is easy. Put the transaxle on its back. Use a pencil to push the checkball against its seat (figure 1). Now pour solvent into the capsule (make sure the 1-2 servo is still in its bore). If the checkball capsule leaks, you'll see solvent running out of its vent (figure 2). If this happens the check ball capsule needs to be replaced. Some wetness is normal since the servo also has a bleed orifice that leaks a little.

The first thing you need to do is take the seal for the servo release tube out. Use a 1/2 x 13 slide hammer adaptor (figure 3). It comes out very easy. The next thing you have to do is put some threads in the checkball capsule. Use a 7/16 x 14 bottoming tap. Thread the capsule until it makes contact until it makes contact with the check ball (make sure you use eye protection).

Once you have threaded the capsule you can use a slide hammer with a 7/16 x 14 adaptor to pull the capsule out (figure 4).

Replace the checkball capsule with GM part # 8668287. Drive the checkball capsule into the bore with a 1/2 inch pin punch until the capsule bottoms out. When you are finished it is a good idea to solvent check the new capsule to make sure that it doesn't leak. Make sure you replace the seal with a new one. A 1-2 or reverse servo pin from a 4T60/440-T4 works really good to drive in the new seals.
