Date: Dec., '87
Ref. No. 88-045-6B
Corp. Ref. No. 838102
SUBJECT: COOLING FAN RUNS AFTER VEHICLE IS SHUT OFF
MODELS AFFECTED: 1988 CENTURYS EQUIPPED WITH THE LG3 3.8L V-6 ENGINE (VIN CODE 3) AND V08 OPTION (H.D. COOLING)
Condition
The cooling fan may run for 10 minutes every time the vehicle is shut off, if the A/C select. switch is in any position except "off". Normally, the fan may run for 10 minutes after ignition shut off, but only if the underhood temperatures are very high. If not corrected, this could lead to a run-down battery under certain driving conditions and could shorten battery life.
Cause
A diode was incorrectly eliminated from the relay. This was corrected in production with VIN's:
Oklahoma City J6408425
Tarrytown JT405862
Correction
Install a diode kit, P/N 12083133, as follows:
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove connector from auxiliary fan relay as shown in Illustration.
3. Remove secondary terminal lock from connector.
4. Remove the tape from both ends of the conduit.
5. Remove brown wire from cavity "D", and cut off existing terminal. Remove wire from protective conduit.
6. Find the loose terminal in the kit. Crimp and solder this terminal to the brown wire.
7. Plug the terminal into the empty cavity of the black connector in the kit.
8. Route the brown lead from the kit thru the conduit and plug into cavity "D" of the relay connector.
9. Retape the conduit with new tape.
10. Tape the connector to the outside of the conduit.
11. Plug the relay connector into the auxiliary fan relay. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
