SUBJECT: SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE - REVISED HUB/BEARING REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

MODELS AFFECTED: 1988 REGALS

SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE

The revised front hub/bearing procedures will replace the procedures on Pages 3C-5 and 3C-6 of the 1988 Buick Regal manual.
HUB/BEARING ASSEMBLY

Tool Required:

J 28733-A Front Hub Spindle Remover

vRemove or Disconnect

1. Wheel cover
2. Loosen axle shaft nut (107) one turn.

vImportant

^ Do not remove nut at this time. Failure to follow proper sequence of removal may cause permanent bearing damage.

3. Loosen wheel nuts.
4. Raise vehicle (see Section 0A).
5. Wheel and tire assembly
6. Brake caliper/bracket assembly (104) (See Section 5)
7. Rotor (103)
8. Axle nut (107) and washer (106)
9. Loosen hub/bearing-to-knuckle attaching bolts (101).
10. Using J 28733-A, push axle splines (105) back out of the hub/bearing.
11. Hub/bearing-to-knuckle attaching bolts (101)

vImportant

^ Protect the axle seals and clamps from damage during handling.

12. Hub/bearing assembly (102)

vInspect

^ All components for wear or damage

vInstall or Connect

1. Hub/bearing assembly (102) onto axle shaft splines (105). Install hub/bearing-to-knuckle attaching bolts (101) (see Section 4D).

vTighten

^ Hub/bearing-to-knuckle attaching bolts to 80 N-m (59 ft.lbs.)

2. Rotor (103)
3. Brake caliper/bracket assembly (104)
4. Wheel/tire assembly
5. Lower vehicle.
6. New drive axle nut (107) and washer (106)

vTighten

^ Wheel nuts to 140 N-m (100 ft.lbs.)
^ Drive axle nut to 250 N-m (184 ft.lbs.)
