Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair

Throttle Position Sensor:




REMOVAL
1. Remove the throttle cables.
2. Remove the throttle body inlet boot.
3. Remove the throttle body vacuum line connector.
4. Remove the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) electrical connector.
5. Remove the throttle body bolts.
6. Lift the throttle body until TPS clears fuel line.
7. Remove the TPS attaching screws and retainers.
8. Remove the throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

INSTALLATION
1. With the throttle valve in the normal closed position, install thethe throttle position sensor on throttle body assembly.
2. Install the retainers and two TPS screws. [1]
3. Install the throttle body bolts.
4. Connect the TPS electrical connector.

Adjustment
1. Install the "SCAN" tool and select TPS.
2. With the ignition "ON," adjust TPS to obtain 0.29 - 0.98 volt.
3. Tighten screws, then recheck reading to insure adjustment has not changed.

5. Connect the throttle body vacuum line connector.
6. Install the inlet boot.
7. Connect the throttle cables.

[1] DO NOT tighten screws until TPS is adjusted.

NOTE: The Electronic Control Module (ECM) will need to relearn the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve pintle position following battery reconnection. This procedure allows the ECM memory to be updated and provides for a stable idle speed.

Idle Learn Procedure
1. Install the Tech 1 "SCAN" tool.
2. Ignition "ON" engine "OFF".
3. Select the "IAC SYSTEM", then "IDLE LEARN" in the "MISC. TEST" mode.
4. Proceed with the idle learn as directed by the Tech 1 "SCAN" tool.
