Positive Crankcase Ventilation: Service and Repair
MAINTENANCEProper operation of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation ([1][2]PCV) system is dependent upon a sealed engine. If oil sludging or dilution is noted and the PCV system is functioning properly, check engine for possible cause and correct to ensure that system will function as intended.
The PCV system should be checked every 15,000 miles and also during regular engine tune-ups. If the PCV system includes a breather filter, located in the air cleaner housing, this filter should be replaced whenever the PCV valve or air cleaner is replaced.
CAUTION: An engine which is operated without any crankcase ventilation can be damaged.
Periodically, inspect the hoses and clamps and replace any showing signs of deterioration. When a periodic inspection indicates the [1][2]PCV is not functioning properly, it should be serviced by replacement only.
