SUBJECT: DRIVE LINE VIBRATION AT 45-60 MPH WITH LIGHT LOAD
MODELS AFFECTED: 1988 RIVIERAS AND REATTAS
Some 1988 Rivieras and Reattas built before VIN breakpoints 407756 (with base brakes) or 407822 and 902612 (with ABS brakes) may exhibit a vibration at 45-60 mph with light engine load. The vibration may be felt through the floor pan and/or the steering wheel and will disappear when pressure is relieved from the accelerator pedal. The vibration may be worse when going through dips in the road or cornering.
This vibration may be caused by the spider assembly in the inboard joints of the drive axles.
To repair this condition, install a "Spider Kit" (Part Number 26009543) on both drive axles. Parts are expected to be available June 16, 1988. The kit includes a spider assembly, drive axle boot, clamps, and grease. Two kits per car will be required. Refer to Section 4D of the 1988 Service Manual for drive axle service procedures.
