Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery cables, then drain cooling system and remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Disconnect ECM electrical connectors. Route electrical harness through bulkhead and position aside.
3. Disconnect engine wiring harness and position aside.
4. Disconnect all vacuum and coolant hoses necessary for engine removal.
5. On models equipped with A/C, unfasten A/C compressor and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines attached.
6. On models equipped with power steering, unfasten power steering pump and position aside, leaving hoses attached.
7. On all models, remove front transaxle strut and on 1986---88 models with automatic transaxle, the rear transaxle strut.
8. Disconnect fuel lines from injection pump.
9. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle cooler lines, then the transaxle shift linkage and downshift cable.
10. On all models, disconnect throttle cable from injection pump.
11. Disconnect redundant ground wire, then remove multi-relay bracket.
12. Raise and support vehicle.
13. On models equipped with power steering, remove power steering line bracket from engine.
14. On all models, remove front wheels.
15. Remove brake calipers and rotors.
16. Remove 2 steering knuckle-to-strut attaching bolts from each side.
17. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold and position aside.
18. Remove 2 body-to-cradle attaching bolts from lower control arm on each side.
19. Loosen 8 remaining body-to-cradle attaching bolts.
20. Remove one bolt from each end of cradle side, leaving one bolt per corner.
21. Position suitable jack stands under front of body, then move hoist back to body pan with a 4 x 4 inch block of wood between hoist and vehicle.
22. Raise hoist and remove jack stands, then place dolly under engine with wooden blocks to maintain position on dolly.
23. Lower vehicle, allowing engine to rest on dolly, then remove engine mount bolts and right front bracket.
24. Remove 4 remaining cradle-to-body bolts, then slide engine/transaxle assembly out from under vehicle.
25. Separate engine from transaxle.
26. Reverse procedure to install.
