SUBJECT: Headlight Switch Panel - 1988 Skylark With Electronic Digital Instrument Cluster (U52)

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1988 Skylark models equipped with Electronic Digital Instrument Cluster (U52, Option). The affected vehicles may experience unexpected loss of tail lamp and side marker lamp function, reducing other drivers' ability to see the vehicle, which might lead to a vehicle crash without prior warning in conditions of poor visibility; i.e., severe weather or nighttime.

Involved are certain 1988 Skylark models equipped with U52 within the following VIN breakpoints:

Shipment of Parts
If you received vehicle(s) involved, headlight switch panel(s) will be shipped to you on a "No Charge" basis, along with VIN information and campaign labels. Parts will not be billed on dealer parts account. Dealers should not order from GMSPO. If transfers make additional parts necessary contact your Zone or Branch office.
Dealer Action
Headlight switch panels are to be changed in vehicles involved. The removed headlight switch panels are to be properly tagged with vehicle information and retained for scrapping by Buick Zone or Branch contact personnel. If a vehicle shipped to your location has been transferred or sold to another location, please send vehicle information and switch panel for that car to your Zone or Branch office for forwarding to proper dealer.
Warranty Information
Labor time to perform the headlight switch panel replacement is .2 hour.
Vehicles with suspect headlight switch panels are to be held at dealerships until a new headlight switch panel has been installed. A VIN listing of vehicles corrected should be recorded. Completed Campaign Labels with Campaign Number 88-C-1 are to be installed on the radiator core support. Campaign bulletin with complete Instructions to follow.
