Transaxle Brace and Brackets:
SPECIAL TOOL REQUIRED (or equivalent)
^ J-28467, Support fixture.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Battery ground cable.
2. Electrical connector from mass air flow sensor.
3. Loosen two hose clamps at air intake duct, then remove intake duct and mass air flow sensor as an assembly.
4. TV cable at both ends.
5. If equipped with cruise control:
^ Cable from throttle body.
^ Vacuum hoses from servo.
^ Servo assembly.
6. Shift control linkage:
^ Mounting bracket at transaxle.
^ Lever at manual shaft.
7. Electrical connectors:
^ Park/Neutral switch.
^ Torque converter clutch.
^ Vehicle speed sensor.
8. Vacuum modulator hose from modulator.
9. Three upper transaxle to engine attaching bolts, then install J-28467, engine support fixture.
NOTE: It is necessary to "load" the support fixture by tightening the wing-nuts several turns to relieve tension on the cradle and mounts.
10. Turn steering wheel to full left position, then raise vehicle and remove both front wheel assemblies.
WARNING: To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off of the hoist.
11. Right front ball joint nut, then separate control arm from steering knuckle.
12. Right drive axle from case.
CAUTION: Carefully guide output shaft past lip seal. Do not allow shaft splines to contact any portion of lip seal surface, otherwise damage to the seal will occur.
13. Left drive axle, using a suitable pry bar with axle boot seal protectors installed.
14. Aspirator electrical connector, then remove left front transaxle mount.
15. Right front transaxle mount attaching bolts.
16. Left rear transaxle mount to transaxle attaching bolt, then the right rear transaxle mount.
17. Engine support bracket to transaxle case attaching bolts, then the stabilizer link to control arm bolt.
18. Flywheel cover attaching bolts, then the cover.
19. Mark relationship of flywheel to converter, then remove flywheel to converter bolts.
20. Rear cradle to front cradle attaching bolts, then install a suitable transaxle support fixture.
21. Position cradle assembly aside and support with a suitable stand, then disconnect cooler lines from transaxle assembly.
NOTE: One bolt is located between the transaxle case and the engine block and is installed in the opposite direction.
22. Remaining lower transaxle to engine attaching bolts, then lower transaxle from vehicle.
CAUTION: Use care to avoid damaging right hand output shaft, shaft seal, hoses, lines and wiring.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Transaxle assembly into vehicle.
CAUTION: Carefully guide output shaft past lip seal. Do NOT allow shaft splines to contact any portion of lip seal surface, otherwise damage to the seal will occur.
2. Lower transaxle to engine block bolts and torque to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).
3. Cooler pipes at transaxle and torque to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).
4. Carefully install right drive axle splines into case past lip seal.
5. Attach ball joint to lower steering kunckle and torque nut to 65 Nm (48 lb ft).
6. Remove transaxle support fixture and install cradle assembly by swinging into position.
7. Front left cradle to body attaching bolt and torque to 100 Nm (74 lb ft).
8. Front cradle dog leg to right cradle member bolts.
9. Front cradle dog leg to rear cradle member bolts.
10. Flywheel to converter bolts and torque all bolts to 62 Nm (46 lb ft).
^ Re-torque the first bolt after all three have been tightened.
11. Flywheel cover and attaching bolts and torque to 12 Nm (107 lb in).
12. Stabilizer link to control arm bolt.
13. Engine support bracket to transaxle case bolts.
14. Right rear transaxle mount.
15. Left rear transaxle mount to transaxle bolts and torque to 41 Nm (30 lb ft).
