Removal and Replacement
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then install a suitable engine support fixture.2. Remove air cleaner assembly and intake air tube.
3. Install engine support fixture tool Nos. J28467 and J36462 or equivalents.
4. Disconnect shift control cable at transaxle, then remove cable from mounting bracket.
5. Disconnect T.V. cable at throttle linkage.
6. Remove exhaust crossover pipe to lefthand exhaust manifold attaching bolts.
7. Disconnect EGR tube from crossover pipe, then disconnect crossover pipe from exhaust pipe.
8. Loosen crossover pipe to righthand exhaust manifold attaching bolts, then swing crossover pipe upward to gain access to the two top bellhousing bolts.
9. Remove the four upper bellhousing attaching bolts. Do not remove the two lower bellhousing attaching bolts at this time.
10. Disconnect [1][2]torque converter clutch electrical connector at transaxle.
11. Disconnect vacuum line from vacuum modulator and park/neutral switch electrical connector.
12. Disconnect electrical connector or speedometer cable from transaxle.
13. Raise and support vehicle, then remove both wheel and tire assemblies.
14. Remove right and left wheel housing splash shields.
15. Detach power steering cooler lines from cradle.
16. Remove heat shield, then detach steering gear from cradle.
17. Disconnect right and left ball joints at steering knuckle. Use ball joint remover tool No. J35917 or equivalent to separate ball joints at steering knuckle.
18. Remove transaxle mount upper attaching nuts, then remove engine mount lower attaching nuts.
19. Remove bolts attaching cradle to body, then remove cradle.
20. Disconnect transaxle oil cooler lines, then detach lines at bracket.
21. Remove torque converter cover.
22. Remove drive axles from transaxle and support from body using suitable wire. When separating right drive axle from transaxle, use drive axle boot seal protector tool No. J33162 or equivalent. The left drive axle can be removed from the transaxle by inserting a suitable pry bar into groove located on inner joint. Use care not to damage drive axle boots.
23. Remove starter motor.
24. Remove converter to flywheel attaching bolts, then remove righthand engine to transaxle support bracket at transaxle.
25. Support transaxle with a suitable transmission jack, then remove remaining transaxle retaining bolts.
26. Carefully lower transaxle assembly from vehicle.
27. Reverse procedure to install.
