Troubleshooting
Fig. 17 Connections To Operate Compound Wound Round Wiper Motor Independent Of Vehicle Wiring:
Refer to Fig. 17, to operate motor independent of vehicle wiring.
WIPER INOPERATIVE OR INTERMITTENT
1. Open lead wire from wiper terminal No. 1 to wiper switch.
2. Wiper switch not securely mounted.
3. Wiper switch defective.
4. Defective gearbox relay.
5. Defective pulse relay or timer, if equipped.
6. Open motor ground.
7. Open series field, armature or circuit breaker.
8. Sticking or damaged motor brushes.
9. Poor connections at gearbox relay.
10. Binding relay switch latch arm.
MOTOR WILL NOT SHUTOFF
Crank Arm Rotates 360°
1. Grounded wire between terminal 1 on gearbox relay and wiper switch.
2. Corroded terminals at switch or motor.
3. Defective wiper switch.
4. Grounded gearbox relay coil.
5. Gearbox relay latch arm binding, or spring missing.
6. Defective washer pump relay or override switch.
7. Loose or defective pulse timer, if equipped.
Crank Arm Moves In & Out of Park Position
1. Open wire between gearbox relay terminal 3 and wiper switch.
2. Defective wiper switch.
3. Defective gearbox relay.
4. Drive pawl spring disconnected.
5. Open shunt field.
MOTOR OPERATES AT HIGH SPEED ONLY
1. Open wire between gearbox relay terminal 3 and wiper switch.
2. Defective wiper switch.
3. Open shunt field, or open wire between gearbox relay and shunt field.
MOTOR OPERATES AT LOW SPEED ONLY (OPERATES PROPERLY IN DELAY & SHUTS OFF PROPERLY)
1. Grounded wire between gearbox relay terminal 3 and wiper switch.
2. Defective wiper switch.
3. Grounded wire between shunt field and gearbox relay, or grounded shunt field.
4. Shorted armature.
MOTOR INOPERATIVE IN DELAY POSITION
1. Defective pulse timer.
2. Defective wiper switch.
3. Open between wiper switch and pulse timer.
WIPERS RUN CONTINUOUSLY IN DELAY POSITION
1. Grounded wire between pulse timer and wiper switch.
2. Defective wiper switch.
3. Defective pulse timer.
4. Defective pulse relay.
5. Fused holding switch contacts, or broken cam on washer pump.
HI SPEED IN MED POSITION (CADILLAC ONLY)
1. Open medium speed resistor.
WIPER STOPS AT RANDOM (CRANK ARM STOPS ROTATING IMMEDIATELY AND DOES NOT RETURN TO FULL PARK POSITION)
1. Relay switch contacts dirty or broken.
INTERMITTENT OPERATION
1. Defective circuit breaker (weak).
2. Circuit breaker tripping because of shorted armature and/or fields causing motor to draw excessive current.
NO APPARENT TROUBLE ON BENCH TEST BUT FAILS OCCASIONALLY ON CAR
1. Armature endplay tight.
2. Gear assembly endplay tight.
3. Loose solder or weld joints.
