SUBJECT: STALL AFTER START UP, NO START, CODE 26 OR 62, BLOWN ECM FUSE (TAPE HARNESS)

MODELS AFFECTED: 1990 SKYLARK WITH 2.3L ENGINE (VIN CODE D)

During the start of 1990 production through VIN LM011790, some 1990 Skylark cars with a 2.3L engine and automatic transaxle may have one of the following conditions:

^ Blown ECM/RLYS Fuse, no SES light, stall after start up, cranks but no start.

^ TCC on in 2nd gear (releases with brake apply), SES Light Code 26, shudder in 2nd gear, scan tool shows no TCC even though it is applied. Intermittent condition may be a complaint of engine miss (caused by TCC busyness), no SES light or codes.

^ After driving 50 mph, SES Light Code 62, scan tool shows no for 2nd gear but actually in 2nd gear.

^ SES Light Code 62, no TCC apply, scan tool says no 3rd gear but actually in 3rd gear.

The cause of these conditions may be the result of a wiring harness coming into contact with the valve body cover of the transaxle. See illustration. Four wires are grouped in this harness that connect to the transaxle TCC connector. The wire insulation may be worn through allowing any of the above conditions to occur.

To prevent this from reoccurring, repair any damaged wiring as instructed in Section 8A of the service manual, then tape the harness to the larger main conduit. This should eliminate any further contact with the transaxle cover.
