Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

REMOVAL:

1. Relieve the fuel system pressure, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
3. Remove the filter bracket attaching screw and filter bracket.
4. Grasp the filter and one fuel line fitting. Twist the quick connect-fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Repeat for the other fitting.

WARNING: Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.

^ Using compressed air, blow out the dirt from the quick-connect fittings at both ends of the fuel filter.
5. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings by squeezing the plastic tabs of the male end connector and pull the connection apart. Repeat the procedure on the other end of the filter.
6. Remove the fuel filter.

INSTALLATION:

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury:
^ Before installing a new filter, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube end of the filter and of the fuel level meter assembly. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak. (During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated).
^ If the new filter or filter line is nicked, scratched or damaged during installation, it must be replaced.

1. Remove the protective caps from the new filter.
2. Install new plastic retainers on the filter inlet and outlet tubes.
3, Connect the quick-connect fittings.
a. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube ends of the filter and of the fuel level meter assembly.
b. Push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place.
c. Once installed, pull on both ends of each connection to make sure they are secure.
4. Align the fuel filter bracket on the frame with the brake line mounting bracket and install the filter bracket attaching screw.
5. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.
