Part 2 of 2
Chart A-7 (2 Of 2):
TEST DESCRIPTION: Numbers below refer to circled numbers on the diagnostic chart.
5. Pressure but less than specifications falls into two areas:
^ Regulated pressure but less than specifications; the amount of fuel to injectors is OK, but pressure is too low. The system will be lean running and may set code E044. Also, possible hard starting cold and overall poor performance.
^ Restricted flow causing pressure drop; Normally, a vehicle with a fuel pressure of less than 165.0 kPa (24.0 psi) at idle will not be driveable. However, if the pressure drop occurs only while driving, the engine will normally surge then stop as pressure begins to drop rapidly.
6. Restricting the fuel return line allows the fuel pump to develop its maximum pressure (dead head pressure). When battery voltage is applied to the pump test terminal, pressure should be above 517.0 kPa (75.0 psi).
7. This test determines if the high fuel pressure is due to a restricted fuel return line or a pressure regulator problem.
FUEL PRESSURE CHECK: (Continued from Part 1 of 2)
CAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury: before connecting fuel line quick-connect fittings, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube ends. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak. During normal operation, the O-rings located inside the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated.
9. Lubricate the male tube end of the fuel lines and the shut-off adapters J37287 (or equivalent) with engine oil.
10. Connect adapters to fuel feed and return lines.
^ Push connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place.
^ Once in stalled, pull on both ends of each connection to make sure it is secure.
11. Connect negative battery terminal.
12. Check fuel pressure.
13. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
14. Place gauge bleed hose into an approved container and open valve to bleed system pressure.
15. Disconnect fuel pressure gauge. Drain any fuel remaining in gauge into an approved container.
16. Disconnect fuel shut-off adapters from fuel feed and return lines.
17. Lubricate the male tube end of the fuel lines, and reconnect quick-connect fittings.
^ Push each connector together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place.
^ Once installed, pull on both ends of connection to make sure it is secure.
18. Tighten fuel filler cap.
19. Connect negative battery terminal.
20. Cycle ignition "ON" and "OFF" twice, waiting ten seconds between cycles, then check for fuel leaks.
