Removal
Figure 2 Cylinder Head:
NOTES
^ Before removing the cylinder head(s) from the engine and before disassembling the valve mechanism, perform a compression test and note the results.
^ During disassembly, be sure that the valve train components are kept together and identified so that they can be installed in their original locations
REMOVAL
1. Remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Remove negative battery cable.
3. Drain and recover coolant. For additional procedures refer to Cooling System / Service and Repair / Draining and Refilling. Service and Repair
4. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
5. Remove exhaust pipe at crossover then lower vehicle.
6. Remove torque struts at engine.
7. Remove coolant recovery bottle.
8. Rotate engine then remove exhaust crossover heat shield.
9. Remove exhaust crossover at right manifold.
10. Remove right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold / Service and Repair. Service and Repair
11. Remove spark plug wires at right cylinder head.
12. Remove valve cover.
13. Intake manifold and plenum. Refer to Intake Manifold / Service and Repair. Service and Repair
14. Remove pushrods.
NOTE Intake and exhaust pushrods are different length with the exhaust pushrod being the longer of the two; intake pushrods are marked orange, exhaust pushrods are marked blue.
15. Remove cylinder head bolts then remove cylinder head.
CLEAN
^ Gasket surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block and the intake manifold.
^ Cylinder block bolt threads.
^ Cylinder head bolts.
