TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONTools Required:
^ J-28467-A Engine Support Fixture
^ J-28467-90 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
^ J-36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg
^ J-35944 Transmission Oil Cooler and Line Flusher
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Air cleaner assembly.
2. Negative battery cable.
3. Install J-28467-A, J-28467-90 and J-36462.
4. Shift cable at transaxle lever and remove cable from mounting bracket.
5. T.V. cable at throttle linkage.
6. Exhaust crossover pipe at left exhaust manifold.
7. EGR tube from crossover pipe.
8. Crossover to exhaust pipe bolts.
9. Loosen crossover to right exhaust manifold clamp.
10. Swing crossover upward to gain clearance to top two bellhousing bolts.
11. Four upper bellhousing bolts. Leave two lower bellhousing bolts attached.
12. TCC electrical connector at transaxle.
13. Vacuum modulator pipe support nut and disconnect from valve.
14. Electrical connection at neutral start switch.
^ Raise vehicle and suitably support.
15. Vehicle speed sensor at transaxle.
16. Front tire and wheel assemblies.
17. Wheelhouse splash shields.
18. Power steering cooler lines from frame.
19. Power steering rack and pinion heat shield.
20. Power steering rack and pinion from frame.
21. Ball joints at steering knuckle, refer to Front Suspension.
22. Transaxle mount upper retaining nuts.
23. Engine mount lower retaining nuts.
24. Frame retaining bolts from body.
25. Frame from vehicle, refer to Frame and Underbody.
26. Transaxle oil cooler lines and support bracket.
27. Torque converter cover.
28. Axles from transaxle and support to body.
29. Starter.
30. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.
31. Engine to transaxle support bracket at transaxle.
^ Support transaxle with jackstand.
32. Remaining transaxle retaining bolts.
33. Transaxle assembly.
IMPORTANT
^ Transaxle oil cooler and lines should be flushed with J-35944 or equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement of the torque converter, pump or case.
INSPECT
^ For inspection and overhaul procedures refer to Transaxle Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Transaxle assembly.
2. Transaxle to engine lower bolts.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 75 N.m (55 lb. ft.)
3. Engine to transaxle support bracket at transaxle.
4. Converter to flywheel bolts.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 60 N.m (44 lb. ft.).
5. Starter.
6. Drive axles.
7. Torque converter cover.
8. Oil cooler lines and support bracket.
9. Frame assembly.
10. New frame retaining bolts.
11. Engine mount lower retaining nuts.
12. Transaxle mount upper retaining nuts.
13. Ball joints to steering knuckle, refer to Front Suspension.
14. Power steering rack and pinion to frame, refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
15. Power steering rack and pinion heat shield.
16. Power steering cooler lines to frame.
17. Wheelhouse splash shields.
18. Tire and wheel assemblies.
19. Vehicle speed sensor.
^ Lower vehicle.
20. Neutral start switch connector.
21. Vacuum modulator pipe support nut and connect to valve.
22. TCC connector at transaxle.
23. Four upper bellhousing bolts.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 75 N.m (55 lb. ft.).
24. Crossover pipe to its proper position.
25. Crossover pipe to right exhaust manifold clamp.
26. Crossover pipe to exhaust pipe bolts.
27. EGR tube at crossover pipe.
28. Exhaust crossover pipe at left exhaust manifold.
29. T.V. cable at throttle linkage.
30. Shift cable at transaxle shift lever with bracket.
31. Remove J-28467-A, J-28467-90 and J-36462.
32. Negative battery cable.
33. Air cleaner assembly.
ADJUST
^ Fluid level.
^ T.V. cable.
^ Shift linkage.
INSPECT
^ For proper completion of repairs.
^ For fluid leaks.
