Removal and Replacement
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove intake air duct.
2. Drain cooling system and disconnect heater hoses at heater core.
3. Remove cable control cover and disconnect throttle and TV cables.
4. Remove shift cable and bracket from transaxle.
5. Remove throttle cable from throttle body, then disconnect vacuum lines and electrical connectors.
6. Remove power steering pump and fluid filler tube.
7. Install engine support tool No. J284467-A or equivalent.
8. Remove top engine to transaxle bolts, then raise and support vehicle.
9. Remove front wheels and left inner engine splash shield. Disconnect lower ball joints from control arms.
10. Remove stabilizer shaft links.
11. Remove front air deflector and left suspension support assembly.
12. Install drive axle seal protector tools No. J34754 or equivalent.
13. Remove both drive axles,
14. Remove flywheel cover, then the flywheel to converter bolts. Mark relationship of flywheel and converter to ease in installation.
15. Disconnect and plug transaxle cooler lines.
16. Remove bolt securing round wires from engine and transaxle.
17. Remove cooler pipe brace and exhaust brace.
18. Remove bolts from engine to transaxle mount.
19. Support transaxle with suitable jack, remove remaining engine to transaxle bolts.
20. Carefully remove transaxle from vehicle.
21. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure torque converter is properly sealed in oil pump.
b. Install transaxle assembly into position with jack, while installing right drive axle.
c. Torque transaxle to engine brace bolts to 44 ft lbs; engine to transaxle bolts as shown. Flywheel to torque converter bolts to 46 ft lbs; transaxle mounting bolts to 32 ft lbs.
d. Adjust TV cable, shift linkage and fluid level.
