Removal/Installation

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove left hand sound insulator.
3. From under instrument panel, pull downward on steering column seal, then remove upper pinch bolt from flexible coupling.
4. Remove line retainer.
5. Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
6. Disconnect tie rods from struts using tool No. J24319-01, then lower vehicle.
7. Remove steering gear mounting clamps, Fig. 14.
8. Disconnect power steering hydraulic lines from steering gear.
9. Move steering gear slightly forward and remove lower pinch bolt from flexible coupling, then detach coupling from steering gear stub shaft and remove dash seal.
10. Remove steering gear through left hand wheel opening.
11. Reverse procedure to install. If steering gear mounting clamp studs have backed out during removal, reinstall studs to cowl and tighten until stud is fully seated. Torque should not exceed 15 ft. lbs. After second reuse of studs, thread locking kit 1052624 must be used.
