Disassembly/Assembly

Fig. 8 Strut Assembly Installation In Strut Compressor:

Fig. 9 Flat On Upper Spring Seat Alignment:

1. Place strut assembly in strut compressor J-34013, Fig. 8.
2. Turn compressor forcing screw until spring compresses slightly.
3. Keep dampener shaft from turning with a T-50 Torx bit and remove nut from top of dampener shaft.
4. Using tool J-34013-38 or equivalent, guide dampener shaft out of assembly.
5. Loosen compressor screw while guiding dampener shaft out of assembly, continually loosening compressor screw till strut dampener and spring can be removed. Be careful to avoid chipping or cracking the spring coating when handling the front suspension coil spring.
6. Install strut dampener in strut compressor J-34013 with clamp J-34013-20 clamped on dampener shaft.
7. Install spring over strut in correct position and move assembly upright in strut compressor and install upper locking pin. Flat on upper spring seat must face out from centerline of vehicle, Fig. 9, or when mounted in strut compressor spring seat faces same direction as steering knuckle mounting flange.
8. Install rod J-34013-38 or equivalent into strut assembly to guide dampener shaft on reassembly of strut.
9. Start turning compressor screw clockwise on J-34013 while guiding J-34013-38 which will center dampener shaft in the assembly.
10. Continue turning compressor screw until dampener shaft threads are visible through top of strut assembly.
11. Install washer and nut, then remove J-34013-20 from dampener shaft.
12. Hold dampener shaft with socket, then torque dampener shaft nut to specifications.
13. Remove three nuts securing strut assembly to strut compressor, the two locking pins at bottom of strut compressor and the strut assembly.
