Ref. No.: 92-215-3
Corp. Ref. No.: 233203
SUBJECT:
MOAN OR SQUEAK NOISE FROM UNDERHOOD STEERING SHAFT AREA
(REPOSITION TOP BRAKE PIPE)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1992 ROADMASTERS
CONDITION:
A moan or squeak noise may be heard on some 1992 Roadmasters coming from the underhood steering shaft area transmitted through the steering column into the vehicle passenger compartment. This condition is most noticeable while making parking lot maneuvers.
CAUSE:
The ABS (Antilock Brake System) pipe adjacent to the plastic stone shield may contact and load the underside of the shield, causing the shield to rub on the rubber center bushing inside the shield.
CORRECTION:
1. With the engine running, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. Leave the steering wheel in the position where the noise is most audible and turn off the engine. Visually inspect the area where the pipes are in contact with the shield as shown in Figure 1.
2. Carefully reposition the top brake pipe away from the shield. Use care not to kink or nick the brake pipe. It does not take much effort to reposition the pipe.
3. Repeat lock to lock turns to verify repair fix.
IMPORTANT:
Do not lube between plastic sleeve and rubber bushing. Petroleum based lubricant may not be compatible with the rubber bushing.
