1. Disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove righthand sound insulator attaching screws, then the sound insulator from under instrument panel.
4. Remove two steering column opening filler attaching screws.
5. Loosen but do not remove steering column support bracket attaching nuts, then lower steering column.
6. On Caprice models, remove six lefthand trim plate retaining screws, then carefully unsnap and pull trim plate away from instrument panel, Fig. 30.
7. On Custom Cruiser and Roadmaster models, remove eight lefthand trim plate retaining screws, then carefully unsnap and pull trim plate away from instrument panel, Fig. 31.
8. On all models, remove windshield defroster nozzle grille from upper trim pad. Remove in-car temperature sensor by twisting clockwise.
9. On Caprice models, remove eight upper trim pad attaching screws, then unsnap pad and pull away from windshield frame, Fig. 32.
10. On Custom Cruiser and Roadmaster models, remove seven upper trim pad attaching screws, then unsnap pad and pull away from windshield frame, Fig. 33.
11. On all models, remove two righthand trim pad attaching screws, then pull pad up from bottom of plate to unsnap.
12. Remove air deflector by unsnapping from plate.
13. Remove four instrument panel compartment door attaching screws.
14. Remove four ashtray assembly attaching screws, then disconnect lamp connector and lighter from assembly.
15. Remove four lefthand side knee deflector attaching screws, then the bolster bolts and bolster, Fig. 34.
16. Remove four deflector attaching bolts and deflector.
17. Remove four instrument cluster retaining screws, then disconnect shift indicator cable from steering column.
18. Gently pull instrument cluster from adapters.
19. Remove stop lamp switch, then loosen capsule nuts and lower steering column.
20. Remove two steering column guide brackets bolts and steering column guide bracket.
21. Remove headlamp switch, accessory switch, parking brake release handle, multifunction alarm module and heater/air conditioning control assembly.
22. Remove radio, instrument panel compartment lamp switch, courtesy lamps, low oil module and ALDL link.
23. Remove lefthand and righthand shroud covers.
24. Remove four instrument panel carrier attaching bolts at windshield frame, one bolt at each door pillar and one bolt attaching lower reinforcement to instrument panel carrier, Fig. 35.
25. Remove instrument panel carrier from windshield lower frame flange, then unsnap and pull away.
26. Remove three outer reinforcement attaching screws, air distributor and inside air temperature sensor duct.
27. Disconnect wiring harness from back of carrier.
28. Reverse procedures to install.
29. Reactivate airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
