SHAFT LOCK, TURN SIGNAL CANCELLING CAM, UPPER BEARING SPRING, UPPER BEARING SEAT, INNER RACE, TURN SIGNAL SWITCH, ALARM ASSEMBLY & LOCK CYLINDER SET

Disassembly
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Gently pull up on horn pad to remove.
3. Disconnect horn lead by gently pushing down on lead and turning to the left, spring will then come out of cancelling cam tower.
4. Remove retainer, nut and steering wheel.
5. Remove shaft lock retaining ring using special tool No. J 23653-C or equivalent to depress shaft lock.
6. Remove shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring and thrust washer.
7. Move turn signal to the ``right turn'' position.
8. Remove multi-function lever, screw and switch actuator arm.
9. Remove screws, hazard knob assembly and turn signal switch.
10. Remove wiring protector and gently pull harness through gearshift lever bowl, gearshift lever bowl shroud and lock cover assembly housing.
11. Remove key from lock cylinder and alarm assembly and clip.
12. Reinstall key and turn to the Lock position, remove lock retaining screw, then lock cylinder set.

Assembly
1. Install lock cylinder set and retaining screw and torque to 30 lb in
2. Install key and turn to the Run position.
3. Install alarm assembly and clip.
4. Install turn signal switch harness through lock housing cover assembly, gearshift lever bowl and gearshift bowl shroud and connect.
5. Install turn signal switch and screws and torque to 35 lb in
6. Install wiring protector, switch actuator arm and screw and torque to 20 lb in
7. Install hazard knob assembly, multi-function lever, thrust washer, upper bearing spring and turn signal cancelling cam.
8. Install shaft lock and shaft lock retaining ring using special tool No. J 23653-C to depress shaft lock.
9. Install steering wheel and nut and torque to 30 lb ft
10. Install horn lead and pad, then connect battery ground cable.

LOCK HOUSING COVER, COVER END CAP, PIVOT & PULSE SWITCH ASSEMBLY, DIMMER SWITCH ROD ACTUATOR & TILT SPRING ASSEMBLY

Disassembly
1. Remove shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, alarm assembly & lock cylinder set as previously described.
2. On models equipped with cruise control, remove housing cover end cap, unplug connector and gently pull through bowl assembly, then remove multi-function lever.
3. On all models, remove cover screws and lock housing cover assembly.
4. Remove tilt lever, cover end cap and dimmer switch rod actuator.
5. Gently pull pivot switch harness through bowl assembly and column housing.
6. Remove pivot pin, pivot and pulse switch assembly, spring retainer, spring and spring guide.

Assembly
1. Install spring guide and spring coated with lithium grease.
2. Install spring retainer, pivot and pulse switch assembly and pivot pin.
3. Feed pivot and pulse switch assembly harness through column housing and bowl assembly and connect.
4. Install dimmer switch rod actuator to cover end cap.
5. Install cover end cap to lock housing cover assembly. Bottom edge of dimmer switch rod actuator should rest on bend in dimmer switch rod.
6. Install lock housing cover assembly.
7. On models equipped with cruise control, gently pull connector through column housing and bowl assembly and connect, then install multi-function lever.
8. On all models, install lock housing cover assembly screws and torque to 80 lb in Screw in the 12 o'clock position first, 8 o'clock position second and the 4 o'clock position last.
9. Perform assembly steps for shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, alarm assembly & lock cylinder set as previously described.

COLUMN HOUSING, LOCK SHOES, ACTUATOR SECTOR ASSEMBLY, SWITCH ACTUATOR RACK, BEARINGS & LOCK BOLT ASSEMBLY

Disassembly

1. Remove shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, alarm assembly & lock cylinder set, lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot & pulse switch assembly, dimmer switch rod actuator & tilt spring assembly as previously described.
2. Remove pivot pins using special tool No. J 21854-01 or equivalent, Fig. 63.
3. Reinstall tilt lever and remove column housing by pulling back on tilt lever and pulling housing down and away from column.
4. Remove driveshaft, switch actuator sector, switch actuator rack and rack preload spring.
5. Remove release lever pin, shoe release lever and release lever spring.
6. Remove dowel pin, lock shoes, shoe springs and bearing assembly.
7. Remove hex head screw, lock bolt spring and lock bolt.

Assembly
1. Install bearing assembly to column housing.
2. Install driveshaft, switch actuator sector and lock shoes.
3. Install dowel pin, shoe springs and release lever spring.
4. Install shoe release lever, release lever pin and rack preload spring.
5. Install switch actuator rack to switch actuator sector.
6. Install lock bolt, lock bolt spring and hex head screw. Torque screw to 37 lb in
7. Install column housing to column. Position column housing and align switch actuator rack with pin on end of actuator assembly. pull back on tilt lever, pushing column housing onto column housing support assembly. Release tilt lever to lock shoes onto dowel pins.
8. Remove tilt lever and install pivot pins lubricated with lithium grease.
9. Perform assembly steps for shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, alarm assembly & lock cylinder set, lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot & pulse switch assembly, dimmer switch rod actuator & tilt spring assembly as previously described.

SHAFT ASSEMBLY, COLUMN HOUSING SUPPORT, SHIFT TUBE ASSEMBLY, IGNITION SWITCH, DIMMER SWITCH & LOWER BEARING ASSEMBLY

Disassembly
1. Remove shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, alarm assembly & lock cylinder set, lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot & pulse switch assembly, dimmer switch rod actuator & tilt spring assembly, column housing, lock shoes, actuator sector assembly, switch actuator rack, bearings & lock bolt assembly as previously described.
2. Remove column from vehicle.
3. Remove bearing and seal retainer, lower spring retainer, lower bearing spring and lower bearing seat.
4. Remove hex head screws, adapter and bearing assembly.
5. Remove column shaft assembly and inspect for accident damage.
6. Mark upper and lower shaft assemblies to ensure proper assembly.
7. Remove upper shaft assembly, lower shaft assembly. Tilt 90° to each other and disengage.
8. Remove centering sphere from upper shaft assembly. Rotate sphere 90° and slip out.
9. Remove joint preload spring from centering sphere.
10. Remove screws, column housing support assembly and dimmer switch rod from steering column jacket assembly.
11. Remove rod from column housing support assembly and screws and shift lever gate from support assembly.
12. Remove hex nut, screw, dimmer switch assembly and mounting stud.
13. Remove ignition switch assembly and switch actuator assembly.
14. Remove switch actuator assembly from switch assembly.
15. Remove shift tube retaining ring, thrust washer and shift lever spring.
16. Remove shift tube using special tool No. J 23072 or equivalent.
17. Remove lock plate, wave washer and gearshift lever bowl.

Assembly
1. Install shift lever spring to gear shift lever bowl and gear shift lever bowl to shift tube jacket.
2. Install wave washer lubricated with lithium grease and lock plate.
3. Install shift tube using special tool No. J 23073 or equivalent.
4. Install thrust washer and shift tube retaining ring.
5. Install gate and screws to support assembly and torque screws to 27 lb in
6. Install dimmer switch rod to support assembly.
7. Install column support assembly and torque screws to 80 lb in
8. Install actuator assembly to track in housing support assembly.
9. Install joint preload spring to centering sphere.
10. Lubricate centering sphere with lithium grease and slip into upper shaft assembly and rotate 90°.
11. Ensure marks made on upper and lower shaft assemblies line up after assembly.
12. Install upper shaft assembly to lower shaft assembly, line up marks and tilt assemblies 90° to each other.
13. Install column shaft assembly lubricated with lithium grease to jacket assembly.
14. Perform assembly steps for shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing spring, upper bearing seat, inner race, turn signal switch, alarm assembly & lock cylinder set, lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot & pulse switch assembly, dimmer switch rod actuator & tilt spring assembly, column housing, lock shoes, actuator sector assembly, switch actuator rack, bearings & lock bolt assembly as previously described.
15. Install adapter and bearing assembly and lubricate inner surface with lithium grease.
16. Install screws and torque to 27 lb in
17. Install lower bearing seat, lower bearing spring, lower spring retainer, bearing and seal retainer.
18. Install ignition switch assembly and mounting stud and torque to 36 lb in
19. Install dimmer switch assembly, screw and nut and torque to 36 lb in
20. Install column into vehicle.
