Removal and Replacement

1. Disconnect battery ground cable from transaxle, then remove air cleaner and air duct assembly.

2. Remove bolt securing TV cable to transaxle, then remove shift cable.

3. Disconnect neutral switch electrical connector, then remove torque convertor clutch and speedometer speed sensor.

4. Disconnect and plug transaxle oil cooler lines from transaxle and bracket.

5. Remove transaxle to engine bolts. Leave one bolt near starter loosely installed.

6. Install engine support fixture tool No. J-28467-A or equivalent, and engine support adapter leg tool No. J-36462, or equivalent.

7. Raise and support vehicle. Remove left front wheel and splash shield.

8. Disconnect left lower ball joint from control arm.

9. Remove intermediate shaft to steering gear stub shaft retaining bolt. Failure to disconnect intermediate shaft from rack and pinion tube shaft will result in damage to steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage could result in loss of steering control.

10. Disconnect stabilizer bar from left control arm. Remove left and right stabilizer mount bolts from frame.

11. Center punch two spot welds at frame crossmember near left stabilizer bar to frame mount. Drill out spot welds enough to separate frame and cross-member.

12. Remove left steering gear to frame bolt, then remove left to right frame section retaining bolts.

13. Support frame with suitable jack stand and remove left frame to body bolts.

14. Remove transaxle mounting nuts from frame, then carefully remove jack stand and the frame assembly.

15. Remove starter and converter shields.

16. Remove three flywheel to converter bolts, the remove two transaxle extension bolts from engine to transaxle bracket.

17. Remove rear transaxle mount bracket assembly. It may be necessary to raise transaxle.

18. Position transaxle jack to transaxle case, then remove two bolts from braces to right end of transaxle.

19. Remove left drive axle, then the remaining engine to transaxle bolt, located near starter.

20. Carefully remove transaxle along with right drive axle, as an assembly.

21. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Align and insert right axle shaft while transaxle is being lifted into position.

b. Ensure intermediate shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If pinch bolt is inserted into coupling before shaft installation, two mating shafts may disengage.

c. Torque transaxle to engine bolts to 55 ft. lbs., flywheel to converter bolts to 46 ft. lbs., steering gear to intermediate shaft to 40 ft. lbs., side frame to crossmember bolts to 37 ft. lbs., LH frame insulator bolts to 40 ft. lbs. and engine mount bolts to 34ft. lbs.

d. Adjust shift linkage, TV cable and fluid level.
