Group Ref.: BodyBulletin No.: 201601
Date: December, 1993
SUBJECT:
INSTRUMENT PANEL CONTACTS DOOR TRIM (DIAGNOSE AND ADJUST/ALIGN)
MODELS:
1991-94 BUICK PARK AVENUE/ULTRA
1992-94 BUICK LESABRE
This bulletin is being revised to include the 1993-94 model years. Previous divisional publication numbers were:
Buick 92-10-33
Condition:
The above models may exhibit a door trim to instrument panel contact condition which may be noisy as well as poor appearance.
Correction:
The following steps will determine the repair for the condition the vehicle is exhibiting.
STEP 1: Verify that both front door pads are installed correctly and securely to the front door panels.
Correct if needed.
Method: A visual inspection of the distance from the front door inner panel to the edge of the door pad, at the forward surface, will verify correct installation.
If this distance is greater than 5 to 7mm, or it is not a consistent distance:
1. Identify possible problem -
a. Missing or bent door trim pad fastener
b. Speaker or wire interference
c. Chrome belt retainer not properly engaged to seal strip
d. Inner belt sealing Strip not fully seated to door inner panel
2. Correct problem and reinstall door pad to door inner.
3. Recheck vehicle for I/P to door trim contact. If there is still contact, continue to Step 2.
STEP 2: If there is still contact and you have verified that the door pads are properly secured, verify that the I/P is properly centered between door pads.
If the I/P to door trim gaps are not equal side to side:
1. Remove I/P upper trim panel, left and right I/P trim plates, wood grain trim plates and knee bolster.
2. Loosen (4) 7 mm hex screws which attach I/P to end brackets (see illustration).
3. Shift I/P to center it between door pads.
4. Retighten 7 mm hex screws.
5. Loosely assemble knee bolster to I/P carrier.
6. Recheck vehicle for contact.
7. If no contact, retighten knee bolster, replace all trim. If contact, continue to step 3.
STEP 3: Verify that the I/P and the door pads are aligned both fore/aft and for height at the knee bolster to arm rest and the top of I/P to door trim (both right and left sides). See illustration.
A visual inspection of these areas will give an indication if the I/P is set properly to the doors.
If one or both ends of the I/P are rearward to the door:
1. Remove knee bolster.
2. Loosen (3) 10 mm hex screws securing appropriate or both I/P end bracket(s) to shear plate. On LeSabre models you will need to remove (2) 7 mm hex screws from the I/P end brackets. See illustration.
3. Shift the I/P end bracket forward enough to align the I/P door trim. (Note: You may need to rework bracket to allow enough movement.)
4. Refasten bracket(s).
5. Reassemble knee bolster and I/P.
If the I/P is "cocked" in the opening (example-the top of I/P is even with the door pad but the knee bolster is rearward of arm rest causing contact):
1. Loosen the bottom (2) of (3) screws securing lip end bracket to shear plate.
2. Shift the bottom of end bracket forward.
3. Retighten.
NOTE:
Depending on how the I/P is "cocked", you may need to loosen all (3) screws to shift the bracket(s) enough and in the direction necessary to get proper alignment. Retighten all screws replace all parts - reinspect.
