Remove or Disconnect
Tool Required: J 35689-A Terminal Remover.
Notice: Steering column must he removed from car before proceeding with the following steps.
1. Do steps 1 through 16 in Turn Signal Switch Assembly Removal / Service and Repair / Remove or Disconnect. Service and Repair
2. Two lower spring retainers (32) and discard.
3. Lower hearing spring (31) and lower hearing seat (30).
4. Adapter screws (29).
5. Adapter and lower hearing assembly (28).
6. Place lock cylinder (24) in "Run" position.
7. Place opening in retaining ring (3) over flat on steering shaft (17).
^ Retaining ring (3) with screwdriver and discard.
8. Thrust washer (4), upper bearing spring (5) and washer (6).
9. Steering shaft (17) from lower end of jacket and bowl assembly (23).
10. Housing screws (12).
11. Steering column housing (14).
12. Housing spacer (16).
13. Bearing (15) with drift and discard.
14. Housing circuit bridge (40).
15. Place lock cylinder (24) in "Off-Lock" position and remove key.
16. Buzzer switch (21). Use screw driver to lift switch tab and pull gently on wires to remove.
17. Lock retaining screw (22).
18. Lock cylinder (24).
19. Rod cap (33) from dimmer switch rod (36).
20. Jacket and bowl assembly (23).
Housing Circuit Bridge Installation:
Retaining Ring Installation:
Install or Connect
Important: All fasteners in the following steps must be firmly seated before being tightened to specified torque.
1. Rod cap (33) into jacket and bowl assembly (23).
2. Steering column lock cylinder set (24).
^ Place in "Off-Lock" position and remove key.
3. Lock retaining screw (22) and torque to 7.0 Nm (62 lb. in.).
4. Buzzer switch assembly (21). Push switch down into retaining bore until bottomed with plastic tab covering lock retaining screw (22).
5. Housing circuit bridge (40) to housing (14) with clip notch over housing lip (40).
6. Lubricate bearing (15) with lithium grease.
^ Press bearing (15) into housing (14) with a 38 mm (1-1/2 in.) socket until bottomed.
7. Housing spacer (16).
8. Steering column housing (14).
9. Housing screws (12) and torque to 10 Nm (88 lb. in.).
10. Turn steering column lock cylinder set (24) to "Run" position and insert steering shaft (17) into the lower end of jacket and bowl assembly (23) until shaft (17) rests against bearing (15).
Important: The shaft will extend 63 mm (2.5 in.) beyond the highest surface of steering column housing (14) when installed properly.
11. Thrust washer (6), upper bearing spring (5) and thrust washer (4).
12. Wrap a two inch wide piece of shim stock 0.127mm (0.005 in.) around the shaft and slip a new retaining ring (3) up to thrust washer (4). Use two long handled screwdrivers and push on retaining ring (3) until it seats in the retainer ring groove in shaft (17).
13. Discard shim stock.
14. Adapter and lower hearing assembly (28).
15. Adapter screws (29) and torque to 3.0 Nm (26 lb. in.).
16. Lower hearing seat (30) and lower bearing spring (31).
17. Two new lower spring retainers (32), compress spring (31) until retainers are positioned 29 mm (1.14 in.) from lower end of steering shaft (17).
18. Steering Column in car.
19. Park lock cable into ignition switch inhibiter and snap in place.
20. Do steps 1 through 16 in Turn Signal Switch Assembly Removal / Service and Repair / Install or Connect. Service and Repair
