SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE - SECTION 6D2 - STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT

MODELS AFFECTED:
1993 REGAL WITH 3800 ENGINE (VIN L)


The procedure for servicing the starter motor on the 1993 Regal has been revised. When servicing this component please use the following procedure.

Starter Motor Replacement - 3800 Engine





Procedure: Figure 1

Remove or Disconnect

1. Negative battery cable from battery.
2. Coolant recovery reservoir.
3. ECM cover.
4. Serpentine drive belt. Refer to Section 6A7.
5. Right side engine cooling fan. Refer to Section 6B.
6. A/C compressor heat shield screw and shield.
7. A/C compressor electrical connectors.
8. A/C compressor bracket brace, nut and bolt.
9. A/C compressor bolts, position compressor aside.
10. Raise vehicle and suitably support. Refer Section 0A.
11. Engine wiring harness clamps at lower front of frame.
12. Flywheel inspection cover screws and cover.
13. Oil level sensor electrical connector.
14. Starter motor bolts.
15. Starter motor from engine.
16. Electrical connections from starter.

Install or Connect

NOTICE:
Before installing starter motor to engine, be sure terminals are secure by tightening nut next to cap on solenoid battery terminal. If this terminal is NOT tight in the solenoid cap, the cap may be damaged during installation of electrical connections and cause starter motor to fail later.



1. Secure electrical terminals on solenoid. Tighten
^ Solenoid battery terminal inside nut to 16 N-m (12 lb.ft.).
^ Solenoid "S" terminal inside nut to 2.5 N-m (22 lb.in.).

2. Electrical connectors to starter. Tighten
^ Solenoid battery terminal outside nut to 16 N-m (12 lb.ft.).
^ Solenoid "S" terminal outside nut to 2.5 N-m (22 lb.in.).

3. Starter motor to engine.

4. Starter motor bolts. Tighten
^ Bolts to 43 N-m (32 lb.ft.).

5. Oil level sensor electrical connector.

6. Flywheel inspection cover and screws. Tighten
^ Screws to 10 N-m (89 lb.in.).

7. Engine wiring harness clamps to lower front of frame.

8. Lower vehicle.

9. A/C compressor and bolts. Tighten
^ Front compressor bolts to 53 N-m (39 lb.ft.).
^ Rear compressor bolts to 31 N-m (23 lb.ft.).

10. A/C compressor bracket brace, bolt and nut. Tighten
^ Bolt to 26 N-m (19 lb.ft.).
^ Nut to 33 N-m (24 lb.ft.).

11. A/C compressor electrical connectors.

12. A/C compressor heat shield and screw.

13. Right side engine cooling fan. Refer to Section 6B.

14. Serpentine drive belt. Refer to Section 6A7.

15. ECM cover.

16. Coolant recovery tank.

17. Negative battery cable to battery. Tighten
^ Cable bolt to 15 N-m (11 lb.ft.). Inspect
^ Engine oil level and adjust as necessary.
