The J 39700 Universal Breakout Box is connected both to the ABS/TCS wiring harness and the EBTCM/EBCM. The EBTCM/EBCM provides power or ground on many circuits only when it is powered up and operational. If a diagnostic test indicates a short to the system voltage or ground, turn ignition Off and disconnect J 39700 from the EBTCM/EBCM. Leave it connected to the harness, then repeat the test which indicated the short (turn ignition On if the test directs to do so). If the short is now not present, it is likely that the short is to circuit from the EBTCM/EBCM when the EBTCM/EBCM is operating. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors to determine the location of the problem, then repair the short condition as needed. Examples of switched power and ground circuits are as follows: Power: 854, Ground: 833; Power: 1715, Ground: 595; Power: 851, Grounds: 886, 883, 884, 856, 874, 594 and 1676.
If the above process does not show fault as EBTCM/EBCM--switched, the short is likely located in other circuits than those mentioned. If continued diagnostics are necessary after this process, always turn ignition Off and reconnect J 39700 to the EBTCM/EBCM before continuing the chart, unless specified to do otherwise.
