Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)

The Daytime Running Lights (DRL) are designed to automatically operate the Lo Beam Headlights when the engine is running and the transmission is not in PARK or NEUTRAL, provided that the Headlights have not already been turned on.

This is accomplished when the BCM energizes the Daytime Running Lights Relay. The Relay contacts close, supplying voltage through the Daytime Running Lights Resistor to the Lo Beam Headlights. The Daytime Running Lights Resistor reduces the voltage applied to the Headlights by approximately 15%, thus reducing the brilliance of the Headlights. The resistor is bypassed during normal Headlights operation.

If the Headlights are operated manually by either the Headlight Switch or Twilight Sentinel while Daytime Running Lights are active, the BCM will de-energize the Daytime Running lights Relay, leaving the Lo Beam Headlights to operate normally.
