Removal and Replacement
NOTICE: Automatic transmission oil cooler flushing must be performed when an automatic transmission assembly is removed for service. The flushing procedure should be performed after the installation of the overhauled or replacement transmission assembly. Failure to flush the system may cause damage to the system and its components.REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. TV cable assembly at throttle body injector throttle lever.
2. Transmission fluid level indicator assembly.
3. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
4. Propeller shaft.
5. Steering column shift control linkage at transmission assembly.
6. Electrical leads at transmission assembly and any clips retaining leads to transmission case.
7. Bolts/screws and cover.
8. Mark position of flywheel assembly to [1][2]torque converter clutch to aid in reassembly.
9. Bolts/screws.
^ Discard bolts/screws.
10. Catalytic converter support bracket.
11. Support and raise transmission assembly slightly, using transmission jack.
12. Nut and washer.
13. Bolts/screws, washers, mount assembly, shims and hanger assembly.
14. Nuts and bolts/screws with insulators and nut, if equipped.
^ Slide member assembly rearward.
15. Lower transmission assembly to access oil cooler upper and lower pipe assemblies and TV cable assembly attachments.
16. Transmission-to-cylinder block bolt/screw.
17. Fluid filler tube assembly and seal.
18. Oil cooler upper and lower pipe assemblies.
19. Cap all openings.
20. TV cable assembly.
21. Support engine with suitable tool.
22. Bolts/screws.
23. Attach J 21366 to [1][2]torque converter clutch.
24. Lower transmission assembly, being careful not to damage any cables, pipes or linkage.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Raise transmission assembly into place.
2. Remove J 21366.
3. Bolts/screws.
Tighten
^ Bolts/screws to 47 N.m (35 lb. ft.).
4. Oil cooler upper and lower pipe assemblies.
5. TV cable assembly.
6. Fluid filler tube assembly and seal to transmission assembly.
7. Transmission-to-cylinder block bolt/screw.
Tighten
^ Bolt/screw to 47 N.m (35 lb. ft.).
8. Nuts and bolts/screws with insulators and nut, if removed.
Tighten
A. Nuts to 41 N.m (30 lb. ft.).
B. Bolts/screws to 34 N.m (25 lb. ft.).
9. Washers, bolts/screws, mount assembly, shims and hanger assembly.
Tighten
^ Bolts/screws to 47 N.m (35 lb. ft.).
10. Washer and nut.
Tighten
^ Nut to 41 N.m (30 lb. ft.).
11. Remove transmission jack.
12. New bolts/screws.
A. Observe marks made during disassembly and align in original position.
B. Make sure weld nuts on [1][2]torque converter clutch are flush with flywheel assembly.
C. Test [1][2]torque converter clutch for freedom of rotation.
D. Remove retaining compound from first three threads of new flywheel bolts/screws.
E. Finger tighten three bolts/screws, then tighten to specification.
Tighten
^ Bolts/screws to 63 N.m (46 lb. ft.).
F. Retighten first bolt/screw tightened to specification.
13. Catalytic converter support bracket.
14. Cover and bolts/screws.
Tighten
^ Bolts/screws to 10 N.m (89 lb. in.).
15. Steering column shift control linkage.
16. Electrical leads and retaining clips.
17. Propeller shaft.
18. Lower vehicle.
19. Transmission fluid level indicator assembly.
20. TV cable assembly at throttle body injector throttle lever.
CLEAN
^ Oil cooler and upper and lower pipe assemblies.

ADJUST
1. Steering column shift control linkage.
2. Readjust TV cable assembly.
3. Fluid level.
