Fig. 113 Exploded View Of Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) Steering Column. 1991 Caprice, Custom Cruiser & Roadmaster W/fixed Column:
Refer to Fig. 113 for exploded view of steering column.
With steering column, inflator module and steering wheel already removed as previously outlined in REMOVAL/INSTALLATION proceed as follows:
1. Place key in ``lock'' position.
2. Remove coil assembly retaining ring, slide coil assembly off end of shaft, then remove wave washer.
3. Remove shaft lock retaining ring using tool J 23653-C or equivalent to depress shaft lock. Use a 1/2 inch wrench to hold the shaft of tool J 23653 or equivalent when releasing the nut. Failure to do so may cause tool to fly off the steering column causing personal injury.
4. Remove shaft lock, then the turn signal cancelling cam.
5. Remove upper bearing spring, then thrust washer.
6. Place turn signal in ``right turn'' position, then remove signal switch arm attaching screw and the arm.
7. Remove turn signal switch attaching screws and position switch out of way. If it is necessary to remove switch, remove wiring harness protector and hazard knob, then gently pull wire harness through gear shift lever bowl, column housing and lock housing cover.
8. If necessary remove coil assembly as follows:
a. Remove connector from terminal connector.
b. Remove wire protector, then attach a wire to the coil assembly connector at the base of the steering column.
c. Pull wire through lock housing cover and gearshift bowl shroud.
9. Remove key from cylinder lock, and remove buzzer switch and clip, then reinsert key in cylinder lock and turn to ``lock'' position.
10. Remove lock retaining screw and lock cylinder set.
Assembly
1. Install lock cylinder set, torquing retaining screw to 22 lb in
2. Place key in ``run'' position, then install buzzer switch and clip.
3. Route turn signal switch wiring harness through lock housing cover, column housing and gear shift lever bowl.
4. Place coil assembly wire through lock housing cover and gearshift bowl shroud.
5. Connect shroud connector to terminal connector.
6. Install turn signal and hazard warning switch.
7. Install signal switch arm, torquing retaining screw to 10 lb in
8. Install hazard knob.
9. Install thrust washer, then the upper bearing spring.
10. Install turn signal cancelling cam, then the shaft lock.
11. Depress shaft lock, then install shaft lock retaining ring.
12. Install steering wheel and inflator module as outlined under REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
