A/C Compressor - Rattling on Startup With System On

Group Ref.: HVAC

Bulletin No.: 431213

Date: April, 1994

SUBJECT:
A/C COMPRESSOR RATTLING OR SLUGGING ON START-UP (REPLACE ACCUMULATOR)

MODELS:
1991-93 BUICK ROADMASTER
1993 CADILLAC FLEETWOOD BROUGHAM
1991-93 CHEVROLET CAPRICE
1991-92 OLDSMOBILE CUSTOM CRUISER

CONDITION:

Customers may comment on an audible rattling noise coming from the compressor when the vehicle is started and the A/C system is on.

CAUSE:

With the engine off, the liquid refrigerant collects inside the compressor cavity. When the engine is started and the A/C is on, the liquid refrigerant passes through the compressor causing the rattling or slugging sound. The sound will go away once the liquid refrigerant has passed through the compressor.

CORRECTION:

A new accumulator with a pressure equalization hole must be installed. This new accumulator will minimize the amount of liquid refrigerant in the compressor.
