Key Reminder Switch: Service and Repair
NOTE: This procedure is for copying keys only. It is not a procedure to assure/determine the correct electrical key code.Key Replacement (Spare Key Available)
1. Insert spare ignition key into key code reader on J 35628-A interrogator.
2. Press ON-OFF rocker switch to ON.
3. A number from 1 to 15 appears in window, designating electrical code of key
4. Cut a new key having the same electrical code determined from J 35628-A interrogator.
5. Start engine using new key to ensure that key is correct both mechanically and electrically.
Key Replacement (No Spare Key Available)
1. If ignition key is lost and there is no spare key, determine mechanical code from code on ignition key lock cylinder. Codes may also be determined from dealer invoice for car or from Buick Zone Office.
2. Cut a new key to this mechanical code and use as test key. This key is used to operate ignition switch for remaining steps. Resistance code of this test key does not matter.
3. Disable SIR System, see 1 and disconnect connector C206. Insert J 35628-90 interrogator adapter between C206 connector halves and connect it to two 2-pin connectors of J 35628-A interrogator.
4. Set key code selector on J 35628-A interrogator to 1.
5. Attempt to start engine using key made in step 2.
^ If engine starts, key code selector is set to correct electrical code. Cut a new key having this electrical code. This is the replacement key.
^ If engine does not start, turn ignition switch to OFF, then turn key code selector to next higher position. Wait 4 minutes and attempt to start engine using new electrical code. Use 4 minute timer on J 35628-A interrogator to indicate 4 minute interval. Start timer by depressing START rocker switch. Red indicator turns OFF at end of 4 minute interval. This procedure must be repeated until engine can be started. Cut a new key having electrical code which allowed car to start. This is the replacement key.
