Rear Door - Rattle When Closing

Rattle in Rear Door when Closing (Apply Foam Patch or Foam Block)

Models:
1994-96 Buick Park Avenue
1994-97 Buick LeSabre

Condition

Some owners may comment on one of the following conditions:

Condition A - (1994-96 LeSabre and Park Avenue)

Rattle in the manual lock/unlock area when closing rear door.

Condition B - (1997 LeSabre) Rattle in lower area when closing rear door.

Cause

Condition A - Contact between inside manual lock/unlock rod and glass hardware module backplate during door closing.

Condition B - Absorber assembly not securely mounted to module.

Correction

Condition A

1. Remove door trim panel and water deflector. Refer to Section 10-6 in the Service Manual.

2. Determine cause of rattle.

3. If cause is consistent with description in Cause A, apply an adhesive foam patch (preferably with a smooth finish) to door module (Figure 1) to create a slight pre-load on the rod, eliminating looseness, and to isolate the rod from the door module backplate.

Important:
Be sure to align foam pad on the edge of the hole, and the corner of the pad to the edge of the step in the backplate.

4. Verify unrestricted rod movement and proper function.

5. Install water deflector and door trim panel.

6. Confirm proper lock function both electrically and manually.

Condition B

1. Remove door trim panel and water deflector. Refer to Section 10-6 in the Service Manual.

2. Attach a foam block to the upper retainer as shown in Figure 2.

3. Verity absorber assembly fits snugly to module.

4. Install water deflector and door trim panel.
