Warning/Indicator Operation

BRAKE INDICATOR
The red BRAKE indicator illuminates to alert the driver to either a brake system condition that reduces braking ability or a park brake that is not fully released. Specific conditions that cause the BRAKE indicator to illuminate include the following:
1. Parking brake not fully released. When the parking brake is applied or not fully released, the switch on the parking brake pedal assembly grounds the BRAKE indicator, causing the indicator to light.
2. Low brake fluid. The brake fluid level switch in the master cylinder reservoir grounds the BRAKE indicator when low brake fluid is detected.
3. Ignition switch BULB TEST position. The ignition switch also grounds the BRAKE indicator when the ignition is moved to the BULB TEST or START position. This condition will last for approximately 2-4 seconds at ignition key-up.
Refer to "Functional Check" for a guide to normal indicator operation.

IMPORTANT: Red BRAKE indicator illumination can indicate reduced braking ability.

ANTILOCK INDICATOR
The Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module (EBCM/EBTCM) lights the amber ANTILOCK indicator when an ABS malfunction is detected. The ANTILOCK indicator informs the driver that a condition exists which partially or totally inhibits ABS functions. When the ANTILOCK indicator is illuminated, but the BRAKE indicator is not, normal power assisted braking is still available.

When both the BRAKE and ANTILOCK indicators are illuminated, something is causing a low fluid condition in the brake hydraulic system. Refer to "System Check" for a guide to normal indicator operation.

IMPORTANT: Illumination of the amber ANTILOCK indicator without the BRAKE indicator illuminated indicates that only antilock braking is no longer available; power assisted braking without antilock control is still available. Use procedures for diagnosing ANTILOCK indicator conditions.

"TRACTION ACTIVE" INDICATOR
When the ignition switch is first turned to RUN, BULB TEST or START the TRACTION OFF indicator lights for approximately two to four seconds. When only the TRACTION OFF indicator remains on beyond four seconds, the cause could be one of the following.
^ Thermal modeling - a system built into the EBTCM to prevent the brakes from overheating. Refer to "Note on Intermittents" for further information.
^ TCS (only) system fault is detected by the EBTCM.
^ A short to ground in the indicator's circuitry.
^ ON/OFF switch and short to ground in switch circuitry
^ PCM requested TC's to disable.

IMPORTANT: When vehicle is equipped with traction control, any symptom which lights the ANTILOCK indicator also lights the TRACTION OFF indicator. Therefore, when both indicators are lit, follow ANTILOCK indicator diagnosis. Refer to "System Check" for a guide to normal indicator operation.
