Test Drive
^ Some diagnostic procedures require a vehicle test drive. This is because some ABS diagnostic trouble codes (i.e., DTC 61) do not set until the vehicle is driven and the system self-test is performed (or other failure conditions are met).^ Before test driving a brake complaint vehicle (especially when the red BRAKE indicator is illuminated), test the brakes at slow speeds to be sure that the vehicle stops normally. Remember that conditions resulting in BRAKE indicator illumination may indicate reduced braking ability.
Test drive vehicle as follows:
1. Perform "System Check." System Check
2. Drive vehicle a short distance making sure vehicle achieves at least 40 Km/h (25 mph).
3. Make several starts and stops from moderate speeds on a smooth, dry surface. At any time during the test drive the ANTILOCK and/or TRACTION OFF indicator lights, use a Tech 1 to enter "Diagnostic Mode" and display (and record) any diagnostic trouble codes which have been set. When no diagnostic trouble codes are set, or neither indicator lights, carefully note any unusual symptoms demonstrated by the system.
4. (When possible) Repeat steps 2 and 3 in a safe, open area with a poor road surface such as gravel (or a wet surface). This should cause the Antilock Brake System Or The Traction Control System to engage.
5. Return to "ABS/TCS Functional Check" chart or appropriate diagnostic chart to continue diagnosis. ABS/TCS Functional Check
