COLUMN JACKET BUSHING, ORIENTATION PLATE CAM, TURN SIGNAL PLATE CAM, UPPER BEARING SPRING, BEARING, COLUMN SHAFT, COLUMN HOUSING & JACKET

DISASSEMBLE
1. Remove steering wheel as outlined in Steering Wheel.
2. Remove turn signal switch mounting screws and turn signal switch, letting switch hang freely.
3. Remove wash/wipe switch mounting screws and wash/wipe switch, letting switch hang freely.
4. Remove retaining ring using lock plate adapter tool Nos. J-23653-91 and lock plate compressor J-23653-C, or equivalents, to compress orientation plate cam and upper bearing spring. Discard retaining ring.
5. Remove orientation plate cam, turn signal cancel cam assembly, upper bearing spring, thrust washer, bearing retainer and bearing assembly. Discard bearing retainer retaining ring.
6. Remove steering column from vehicle as outlined under Steering Column, Replace.
7. Inspect steering column for damage.
8. Remove steering column jacket bushing assembly, then the steering column shaft assembly from lower end of steering column jacket assembly.
9. Remove retaining ring from shaft assembly and discard, then the four pan head tapping screws.
10. Disconnect park lock cable from lock cylinder housing assembly.
11. On models with column shift, disconnect park lock cable from shift gate assembly.
12. On all models, remove bearing and steering housing assembly from steering column jacket assembly.


ASSEMBLE
NOTE: Ensure all fasteners are securely seated before applying torque. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunctioning of steering column.
1. Assemble bearing and steering housing assembly to steering column jacket assembly using four pan head tapping screws. Torque screws to 47 lb in
2. Install new retaining ring to lower groove of steering shaft assembly, ensuring ring is firmly seated in groove.
3. Install steering column shaft assembly into lower end of steering column jacket assembly until bottomed.
4. Place key in Off-Lock position, remove key, rotate shaft until lock bolt engages and locks shaft in position, then insert key.
5. Install steering column jacket bushing assembly and snap into position.
6. Install bearing assembly, then lubricate.
7. Install bearing retainer, thrust washer, upper bearing spring and turn signal cancel cam assembly. Lubricate turn signal cancel cam assembly with synthetic grease.
8. Install orientation plate cam, then a new retaining ring using lock plate adapter and lock plate compressor to compress orientation plate cam and upper bearing spring. Ensure retaining ring is firmly seated in groove.
9. Install steering column as outlined under Steering Column.
10. Install steering wheel as outlined in Steering wheel.
