Left Side (Front)
LEFT (FRONT) CYLINDER HEADIMPORTANT: During disassembly, keep the valve train components together and identified so that they cent be installed in their original locations. Do a compression test and note the results before you do the following repairs:
^ Remove the cylinder head(s)
^ Disassemble the valve mechanism
TOOL REQUIRED
^ J 36660 Torque Angle Meter
Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Recover refrigerant.
2. Lower intake manifold.

4. Spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
5. Valve rocker cover.
6. Valve rocker arms.
7. Pushrods.
8. Oil level indicator and fill tube.
9. Air conditioning compressor bolts from top.
10. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
11. Air conditioning compressor bolts.
12. A/C lines from rear of compressor.
13. Electrical connections from rear of compressor.
14. A/C compressor.
15. A/C compressor lower bracket bolts.
16. A/C compressor upper bracket bolts.
17. A/C compressor bracket.
18. Cylinder head bolts.
19. Cylinder head.
CLEAN
^ Cylinder head. Carefully remove all varnish, soot and carbon to the bare metal. DO NOT use a motorized wire brush on any gasket sealing surfaces.
^ Cylinder block bolt threads.
^ Cylinder head bolts.
INSPECT
^ For cylinder head condition. Refer to Cylinder Head Reconditioning.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Install a new cylinder head gasket. Place the gasket in position over the dowel pins, with the note "This Side Up" showing.
2. Install the cylinder head.
3. Coat the cylinder head bolt threads with sealer. Use GM P/N 1052080 sealer or its equivalent.
4. Install the cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) in the sequence shown.
- Use the Torque Angle Meter in order to tighten the bolts an additional 90 degrees.
5. A/C compressor bracket.
6. A/C compressor upper bracket bolts.
7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
8. A/C compressor lower bracket bolts.
9. Electrical connections to rear of compressor.
10. A/C compressor.
11. A/C lines to rear of compressor.
12. A/C compressor bottom bolts.
13. Lower vehicle.
14. Air conditioning compressor top bolts.
15. Oil level indicator and fill tube.
16. Pushrods.
17. Valve rocker arms.
18. Valve rocker cover.
19. Spark plug wires to the spark plugs.
20. Exhaust crossover pipe.
21. Lower intake manifold
22. Evacuate and charge the A/C system.
23. Leak test the A/C system.
IMPORTANT: It is recommended that engine oil be drained and crankcase refilled with clean engine oil to avoid possible contamination by engine coolant and/or foreign material when removing cylinder head.
INSPECT
^ Proper fluid levels.
^ For leaks.
