Clean
^ All gasket mating surfaces.
Inspect
^ Inspect the cylinder head.
NOTICE: This engine uses special torque to yield head bolts. This design bolt requires a special tightening procedure. Failure to follow the given procedure will cause head gasket failure and possible engine damage.
Install or Connect
1. Clean threads in the block using a 7/16-14 tap.
2. Install head gasket with arrow pointing to front of engine.
NOTICE: Head gaskets are not interchangeable. Failure to install with arrow pointing to front will cause gasket failure and possible engine failure. Left hand gaskets can be identified with the letter "L" punched in it (next to the arrow).
3. "New" cylinder head bolts.
NOTICE: This bolt is designed to permanently stretch when tightened. The correct part number fastener must be used to replace this type of fastener. Do not use a bolt that is stronger in this application. If the correct bolt is not used, the parts will not be tightened correctly. Part or system damage may occur.
Tighten: Bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb. ft.) in the sequence shown.
4. Rotate each bolt 130 degrees in sequence using J 36660.
5. Rotate the center four bolts an additional 30 degrees in sequence using J 36660.
6. Pushrods, guide plate and rocker arm assemblies.
^ Apply GM approved thread lock compound or equivalent to rocker arm pedestal bolts before assembly.
NOTICE: This bolt is designed to permanently stretch when tightened. The correct part number fastener must be used to replace this type of fastener. Do not use a bolt that is stronger in this application. If the correct bolt is not used, the parts will not be tightened correctly. Part or system damage may occur.
Tighten
^ Rocker arm pedestal bolts to 15 N.m + 90° (11 lb. ft. + 90°).
7. Lower Intake manifold.
8. Rocker arm cover.
9. Exhaust manifold.
10. A/C compressor bracket bolt.
Tighten
^ Bolt to 70 N.m (52 lb. ft.).
