Power Steering Gear

Removal






1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove left hand sound insulator.
3. From under instrument panel, pull downward on steering column seal, then remove upper pinch bolt from flexible coupling. Remove line retainer (if applicable).
4. Master cylinder from brake booster (position aside w/lines attached).
5. .Power brake booster from cowl wall. Brake pedal push rod from pedal, 1 clip.
6. Remove inner tie rod bolts, lock plates, and washers.
7. Remove steering gear mounting clamps, Fig.17 .
8. Disconnect power steering hydraulic lines from steering gear.
9. Move steering gear slightly forward and remove lower pinch bolt from flexible coupling, then detach coupling from steering gear stub shaft and remove dash seal.
10. Remove steering gear from under hood.

Note:If steering gear mounting clamp studs have backed out during removal, reinstall studs to cowl and tighten until stud is fully seated. Torque should not exceed 15 ft. lbs. After second reuse of studs, thread locking kit No. 1052624 must be used.

Installation

1. Install rack and pinion under hood.
2. Install dash seal onto rack and pinion.
3. Move rack and pinion assembly forward and install coupling.
4. Install flange and lower coupling pinch bolt.
Tighten lower pinch bolt to 41 Nm (30 lbs ft).
5. Install gear inlet and outlet hose assemblies to rack and pinion.
Tighten power steering lines to 27 Nm (20 lbs ft)
6. Hand start clamp nuts. Tighten left side clamp nuts first, then tighten right side clamps.
Tighten mounting nuts to 30 Nm (22 lbs ft).
7. Connect inner tie rods with washers and lock plates to rack and pinion.
Tighten inner tie rod bolts to 90 Nm (65 lbs ft).
8. Install line retainer (if applicable).
9. Install steering column pinch bolt.
10. Install power brake booster to cowl wall.
11. Connect brake pedal push rod to pedal, 1 clip.
12. Connect master cylinder to brake booster.
13. Tighten upper pinch bolt to 41 Nm (30 lbs ft).
14. Install left sound insulator.
15. Fill reservoir with power steering fluid and bleed air from system.
