Left Side (Front)




TOOL REQUIRED
^ J 36660 Torque Angle Meter

REMOVAL
1. Perform an engine compression test.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
3. Drain the engine coolant. See Cooling System.
4. Drain the engine oil.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Remove the upper intake manifold.
7. Remove the lower intake manifold.
8. Remove the valve rocker arm and pushrod.
9. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. See Exhaust System.
10. Remove the engine mount strut bracket.
11. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
12. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. See Powertrain Management.
13. Remove the spark plugs. See Powertrain Management.
14. Remove the left (front) exhaust manifold.





15. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
16. Remove the cylinder head.





17. Remove the cylinder head gasket.
18. Clean the following areas:
^ The gasket surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and intake manifold
^ The cylinder block bolt thread
^ The cylinder head bolts

INSTALLATION
1. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
2. Install the cylinder head over the locator pins and over the gasket.





3. Tighten the NEW cylinder head bolts in sequence.
^ Tighten the bolts in sequence to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
^ Use the Torque Angle Meter in order to turn the bolts in sequence an additional 95 degrees.
4. Install the left (front) exhaust manifold.
5. Install the spark plugs. See Powertrain Management.
6. Install the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. See Powertrain Management.
7. Install the oil level indicator tube.
8. Install the engine mount strut bracket.
9. Install the exhaust crossover pipe. See Exhaust System.
10. Install the valve rocker arm. Install the pushrod.
11. Install the lower intake manifold.
12. Install the upper intake manifold.
13. Refill the engine oil.
14. Refill the engine coolant. Add two engine coolant sealant pellets. Use GM P/N 3634621 or the equivalent. See Cooling System.
