Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Starter Motor (Typical):




IMPORTANT
^ The SD255 starter motor may be serviced internally or as a complete unit.
^ The PG260F and the PG260M starter motors are serviced only as a complete units.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Battery ground (negative) cable.
2. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
3. Electrical connections at starter.
4. Converter cover.
5. Starter motor mounting bolts/screws.
6. Starter motor from engine.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

NOTE: Refer to Service Precautions.

1. Starter motor to engine.
2. Starter motor mounting bolts/screws.
Tighten
^ Bolts/screws to 43 N.m (32 lb. ft.).
3. Converter cover.
4. Electrical connections to starter.
Tighten
^ Starter solenoid "BAT" terminal nut to 9.5 N.m (84 lb. in.).
^ Starter solenoid "S" terminal nut to 3 N.m (27 lb. in.).
5. Lower vehicle.
6. Battery ground (negative) cable.
