Front Engine Plate: Service and Repair

TOOL REQUIRED
J 36660 Torque Angle Meter

REMOVAL
1. Remove the torque axis engine mount.
2. Remove the torque axis mount bracket.
3. Remove the drive belt.
4. Remove the power steering pump and set aside. See Steering and Suspension.
5. Remove the drive belt idler pulley and the pulley bracket.
6. Remove the two heater hoses from the belt tensioner.
7. Remove the drive belt tensioner assembly.
8. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
9. Remove the generator support brace. See Starting and Charging.
10. Remove the generator and set aside. See Starting and Charging.





11. Disconnect the electronic ignition module.





12. Remove the crankshaft position sensor shield.
13. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
14. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
15. Remove the oil pan-to-front cover bolts.





16. Remove the front cover attaching bolts.
17. Remove the front cover.
18. Inspect the timing chain for overall in and out movement. Movement should not exceed 25 mm (1 inch).
19. Inspect the sprockets for wear.
20. Clean the gasket mating surfaces at the timing chain cover, and cylinder block.
21. If the oil pan gasket is excessively swollen, the oil pan must be removed and the gasket replaced.

INSTALLATION





1. Install the gasket at the cylinder block.
2. Loosen the oil pan bolts and lower the oil pan to allow clearance for the front cover installation.
3. Install the front cover.
4. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the bolt threads.
5. Install the front cover attaching bolts. Tighten the bolts to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). Use the Torque Angle Meter in order to rotate the bolts an additional 40 degrees.
6. Install the coolant pump pulley. See Cooling System.
7. Install the crankshaft position sensor.
8. Install the crankshaft position sensor shield.
9. Install the oil pan bolts. Tighten the oil pan bolts to 14 Nm (125 inch lbs.).
10. Install the electronic ignition module.
11. Install the generator. See Starting and Charging.
12. Install the generator brace. See Starting and Charging.

CAUTION: This bolt is designed to permanently stretch when tightened. The correct part number fastener must be used to replace this type of fastener. Do not use a bolt that is stronger in this application. If the correct bolt is not used, the parts will not be tightened correctly. The system or the components may be damaged.

13. Install the crankshaft balancer and bolt.
14. Install the drive belt tensioner assembly.
15. Install the two heater hoses to the belt tensioner.
16. Install the drive belt idler pulley. Install the pulley bracket.
17. Install the steering pump. See Steering and Suspension.
18. Install the drive belt.
19. Remove the torque axis mount bracket.
20. Remove the torque axis engine mount.
