TOOL REQUIRED
^ J 36660 Torque Angle Meter

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.
2. Drain the coolant. See Cooling System.
3. Drain the engine oil.
4. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement Service and Repair
5. Remove the air cleaner duct. See Powertrain Management.
6. Remove the right engine mount strut bracket.
7. Remove the lower intake manifold.
8. Remove the left (front) exhaust manifold. See Exhaust System.
9. Remove the left (front) rocker arms and push rods.

10. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
11. Remove the cylinder head.

12. Remove the cylinder head gasket.
13. Clean the mating surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block and the intake manifold.
14. Clean the cylinder block bolt hole threads using a 7/16-14 tap.

CAUTION: Head gaskets are not interchangeable. The head gasket must be installed with the arrow pointing to the front of the engine. Installing the head gasket in any other direction will cause gasket failure and possible engine failure.

INSTALLATION
1. Position the head gasket with the arrow pointing to the front of the engine.
2. Install the cylinder head.

CAUTION: This bolt is designed to permanently stretch when tightened. The correct part number fastener must be used to replace this type of fastener. Do not use a bolt that is stronger in this application. If the correct bolt is not used, the parts will not be tightened correctly. The system or the components may be damaged. This engine uses special torque to yield head bolts. This design bolt requires a special tightening procedure. Failure to follow the given procedure will cause head gasket failure and possible engine damage.

3. Install the NEW cylinder head bolts. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 50 Nm (37 lb ft). Rotate each bolt 120 degrees in sequence. Use Torque Angle Meter. Rotate the center four bolts an additional 30 degrees. Use Torque Angle Meter.
4. Install the left (front) push rods and rocker arms.
5. Install the left (front) valve rocker arm cover.
6. Install the left (front) exhaust manifold. See Exhaust System.
7. Install the lower intake manifold.
8. Install the upper intake manifold.
9. Install the right engine mount strut bracket.
10. Install the air cleaner duct. See Powertrain Management.
11. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement Service and Repair
12. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable.
13. Fill the cooling system with coolant. See Cooling System.
14. Fill the engine with oil.
15. Inspect for proper fluid levels.
16. Inspect for leaks.
