Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Jump Starting Procedure

1. Set parking brake and place the automatic transaxle to "PARK". For vehicles equipped with a manual transaxle, set parking brake, place transaxle shift lever in neutral position and block wheels. TURN OFF THE IGNITION, TURN OFF LIGHTS, AND ALL OTHER ELECTRICAL LOADS.
2. Position the vehicle with the good (charged) battery so that the jumper cables will reach, but never let the vehicles touch. Also, be sure the jumper cables do not have loose or missing insulation.
3. Check the built-in hydrometer. If it is clear or light yellow, replace the battery.
4. Attach the end of one jumper cable to the positive terminals of the booster battery and the other end of the same cable to the positive terminal of the discharged battery.
5. Attach one end of the remaining negative jumper cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery.

CAUTION: Do not attach directly to the negative terminal of the discharged battery. Doing so could cause sparks and possibly battery explosion.

- Make final connection of the negative cable to a solid engine ground (such as A/C compressor bracket or generator mounting bracket), at least 450 millimeters (18 inches) from the battery of the vehicle being started.

6. Start the engine of the vehicle that is providing the jump start and turn off electrical accessories. Then start the engine in the vehicle with the discharged battery.
7. Reverse these directions exactly when removing the jumper cables. The negative cable must be disconnected from the engine that was jump started first.
