Fuel System Cleaning Procedures
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
Tools Required:
^ J 34730 Fuel Pressure Gauge
^ J 35731 Fuel Sender Spanner Wrench
IMPORTANT: Only use oil free compressed air to blow out fuel pipes. If the in-line fuel filter is plugged, the fuel tank should be inspected internally and cleaned if necessary.
1. Relieve the fuel system fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Release / Service and Repair / Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.

2. Drain the fuel tank (1). Refer to Fuel Tank / Service and Repair / Fuel Tank Draining.
3. Remove the fuel tank (2). Refer to Fuel Tank / Service and Repair.
IMPORTANT: When ever the fuel tank is cleaned, the fuel pump fuel strainer must be inspected (2). If the fuel pump fuel strainer is contaminated, the fuel pump fuel strainer must be replaced and the fuel pump must be inspected. If dirt and debris are found at the fuel pump inlet, then the fuel pump should be replaced.
IMPORTANT: When flushing the fuel tank, the fuel and water mixture needs to be treated as a hazardous material. The material needs to be handled in accordance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations.
4. Remove the fuel sender assembly. Refer to Fuel Tank Unit / Service and Repair / Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement.
5. Flush the fuel tank with hot water.
6. Pour the water out of the fuel sender assembly opening in the fuel tank. Rock the fuel tank in order to be sure that the removal of the water from the fuel tank is complete.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTICE: Refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction / Service Precautions.
1. Install the fuel sender assembly (4) in the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Unit / Service and Repair / Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement
2. Install the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank / Service and Repair.
3. Lower the vehicle.
4. Add fuel to the fuel tank (1).
5. Install the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
6. Install the negative battery cable.
7. Inspect for leaks.
7.1. Turn the ignition switch to the On position for 2 seconds.
7.2. Turn the ignition switch to the Off for 10 seconds.
7.3. Turn the ignition switch to the On position.
7.4. Check for fuel leaks.
