The instrument cluster contains a microprocessor which the instrument cluster uses to recognize operational malfunctions, alert the driver through indicators or Driver Information Center messages and store DTC which identify malfunction areas for the technician.

In order to perform all of these functions, the instrument cluster microprocessor has its own inputs, outputs and program software.
