SIR Coil Assembly
Tilt Steering Column (Part 1 Of 2):
Notice: Before performing the following procedures, check the wire harness asm, jumper for burnt 2 amp fuses (67).
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Do steps 1 through 7 under REMOVAL PROCEDURE in LOWER SHROUD, UPPER SHROUD.
2. Air bag module and steering wheel.
Notice: SIR coil assembly will become uncentered if:
1) Steering column is separated from the steering gear and allowed to rotate.
2) Centering spring is pushed down, letting the hub rotate while the coil is removed from the steering column.
3. Remove the three wire harness straps from the steering column wire harness.
4. Remove the retaining ring (30).
5. Remove the SIR coil assembly (2).
6. Remove the wave washer (4).
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunction of steering column.
1. Center the race & upper shaft assembly and SIR coil assembly.
A. Wheels straight ahead.
^ Block tooth and centering mark on the shaft assembly at 9 o'clock position.
B. Ignition switch to the "LOCK" position.
C. Ensure the coil is centered.
2. Install the wave washer (3).
Notice: New SIR coil assembly will be pre-centered. Install the new coil, remove and dispose of centering tab.
3. Install the SIR coil assembly (2).
A. Ensure the shaft and coil are centered.
B. Align the coil with the horn tower and slide onto the shaft.
4. Install the retaining ring (30).
^ Ring must seat securely in groove on the shaft.
5. Route the lower coil wire along the steering column jacket assembly.
6. Install the three wire harness straps to the steering column wire harness.
7. Do steps 1 through 7 under INSTALLATION PROCEDURE in LOWER SHROUD, UPPER SHROUD.
